Have you ever gone outside in the hot sun and wished for a cool, delicious drink? Well, this drink is refreshing, easy-to-make, and teaches you about science! It’s a kid-friendly version of a mojito that is sour, sweet, and minty.
Frosty Limeade
Servings: 2
Ingredients:
- Juice of 2 limes
- 3 teaspoons of granulated sugar
- 4 sprigs of mint
- Ice
- 1 cup of sparkling water
Instructions
- Mix the lime juice, sugar, and 2 sprigs of mint.
- Add 12 ice cubes to the mixture.
- Blend in a blender for 30 seconds until all of the chunks of ice have been crushed.
- Pour the drink into 2 separate glasses (or 1 if you’re feeling thirsty).
- Pour sparkling water into the drinks until it fills the top of each glass.
- Garnish with remaining mint springs and lime slices.
Now for the science!
Why is this drink fizzy?
- The ingredient in the frosty limeade that makes it fizzy is carbonated water. Carbonated water is sparkly because it was infused with carbon dioxide gas under pressure. The carbon dioxide and water react chemically and produce carbonic acid, making carbonated water slightly acidic. Something is classified as acidic when it has a pH of less than 7, the pH of water. When the carbon dioxide and water react, they create a solution with a pH of 3-4.

I’m so excited to make this. It seems easy to make and it sounds like a Mojito, my favorite drink. We have a lot of mint growing in our garden too!

That is awesome! I’m sure freshly grown mint will taste delicious in this recipe!
