This experiment is about as simple and short as they get, but it is still super cool! It ends with a BOOM, which is sure to make you jump out of your seat. This activity shows that science is everywhere, even in the most simple things.
What you need:
- A plastic water bottle with a cap.
Steps:
- Secure the cap on the top of the water bottle.
- Twist the water bottle as much as you can.
- Remove the cap of the water bottle.
- Listen to the boom and watch the “cloud” that flows out of the bottle.
What makes the water bottle pop?
When we twist the water bottle, we are compressing the air inside and pushing all of the molecules together into a smaller area. When we remove the cap of the bottle, the pressure is released and the air molecules can expand. This creates the “cloud” that we see coming out of the water bottle.

We do this at home a lot, but I never noticed the cloud. This is really cool. Can’t wait to show the kids. Thank you!!!
