Are you ever super excited to do a science experiment but realize you have no supplies in your house? Well, that’s what makes this experiment so great! It’s super easy, fun, and fast!
What you need:
- An egg
- A tall glass
- Water
- Salt
Steps:
- Pour water into the glass
- Add the egg to the glass and watch it sink to the bottom
- Slowly add salt to the glass of water and stir it until it dissolves (when enough salt has been added, the egg will be floating in the glass)
- Slowly pour fresh tap water over the top of the egg, and watch it as it sinks down and “levitates” in the water
How does this work?
Density is the measure of quantity of mass per unit volume. The egg is sinks in the fresh water because it is more dense, or has more molecules per square inch. When we dissolve salt in the water, this increases its density by adding more molecules per square inch. The salt water eventually becomes denser than the egg, and the egg beings to float. When we add fresh water again, the egg floats beneath the fresh water while floating above the salt water, trapping it in the middle of the glass.
