Making Marbled Paper

Have you ever wanted to make a bright and bold poster but didn’t have any fun paper? Using shaving cream and food coloring, you can make your own fun and colorful designed papers!

What you need:

  • Paper (preferably cardstock)
  • Shaving cream
  • Food coloring or dye
  • A tray or pan

How to make it:

  • First, spray a thin coating of shaving cream on the pan or tray.
  • Next, disperse drops of food coloring in the shaving cream
  • Using your finger or a butter knife, swirl the drops of food coloring around in the shaving cream
  • Place the paper on top of the shaving cream and gently press down
  • Lift the paper from the shaving cream
  • Wipe the shaving cream off the paper using a paper towel
  • Be sure to completely wipe the shaving cream, otherwise, the design will become smeared like this:
  • Wait for the paper to dry
  • Now you can use the paper to make a sign or to draw a picture!
  • You can also make a notebook using this paper. Just staple some sheet of paper inside a folded piece of marbled paper!

How does this involve science?

  • When you put food coloring in water, it starts to spread out evenly in the water. Why doesn’t the food coloring do this in shaving cream? Shaving cream is made from soap and water, and soap contains fat. Fat keeps the food coloring from spreading easily throughout the shaving cream and allows color streaks to form. This is what makes such a pretty design in the shaving cream!

What a great idea and a fun way to pass the time! I really appreciated your explanation about how the fat in the shaving cream helps the color streaks to form.
