The Broken Pencil

This experiment is probably one of the most simple experiments there is, but it is still super fun and teaches an important concept! Calling it an experiment may be a little bit of a stretch, but this science activity is sure to amaze kids.

What you need:

  • A glass filled halfway with water
  • A pencil

Steps:

  • Simply place the pencil in the glass at an angle with the top of the pencil leaning against the side of the glass.
  • Watch your pencil appear to be broken at the surface of the water!

What “breaks” the pencil?

Light waves travel at different speeds in different mediums, or through different materials. In this experiment, the light we see from the pencil travels faster in the air than in the water. This change in speed causes the light to travel in a slightly different direction, a process called refraction. Refraction, the change in direction of the light waves, is what makes the pencil appear broken in this activity.
